DirtFest ride report

DirtFest was a lot of fun. I got there Friday, parked at the Five Points trail head and hit Stoney to Doe to Switch down to the fest area. I talked to several vendors while they were setting up and was offered lots of swag like bottles, stickers, etc.
The registration table was handing out Stans sealant and really nice laminated pocket maps of the trail system. The maps came in handy and are definitely keepers.
Friday night was a band and beer tasting. Great weather and a good time had by all. The only areas well lit were the beer tent and band tent. I frequently had to recharge my glow in the dark beer mug under the lights near the tap. I recall that worked out even better than expected!

I hit the trails Saturday with the MBMVP and his family. Lots of families were there.
I took the long travel bike for lack of anything else in operable condition and had a great time. The suspension loaded up at the bottom of the humps and helped launch the bike over the next one. Minimal pedal effort except on climbs. Lots of people but plenty of room. Trails were mostly dry and in good shape despite rain earlier in the week. I encountered no traffic jams slowing the trails at all. Most people were riding up the road and down the trails. It worked out well.

The Hydro Loop intersection seemed to be the congregation point. Hydro was one way and people were hanging out, riding loops and socializing.
I headed home Saturday afternoon just as the rain set in.
My phone doesn't have a flash so none of the pics I took Friday night came out. Sorry.
I think the trails have great flow. I think it is possible to go through entire sections with very little pedal input. Other areas make you pay for it. I had a great time. I will go back.
Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

The walk-through yesterday with Levi on the new trail to replace Wildcat went really well. Levi liked what he saw and is going to move ahead with requesting the environmental assessment to be performed. He said that will probably take about a month to move through Harrisburg. If everything goes well with that, we will receive the go-ahead to start building. He doesn't expect any issues with the assessment since it is a ridgetop trail.
I think the line will run in to be very similar to the higher sections on Abigail. Fun and flowy with enough rocks creeping into the mix to keep you on your toes. Not a lot of rocks poking through the leaf litter and duff right now, but given time, they will emerge. There is a rock garden or two, nothing major in the world of Michaux. I'll say it again, I think this is going to be fun, flowy trail.
This is a great thing. New official trail in Michaux. I'm looking forward to advertising some work days in June.

new trail

Purple line = the new trail
orange arrows are the usual race start
Purple line is where we will all need to "put up" with tools.
I think this will happen this season. Possibly real soon.
Is anyone interested in helping?
SMP Summary
Battle of Monterey Pass
A group from the Waynesboro area wanting to develop a historical Civil War battlefield site at Monterey Pass (east of Mentzer Gap Rd on Route 16)
Camp Michaux
A group wanting to create a historical protected site of the remains of the old CCC and POW camp located off Michaux Road. They also want to restore/preserve the barn wall that is currently deteriorating. This is the wall visible from the trailhead parking lot along Michaux Rd. We ride very near this location. I expect things may change at that site in coming years
Cumberland Valley Rail Trail
A team working to extend the rail-trail from Newville to Carlisle, making one trail from Ship > Carlisle.
Michaux Trails
The one I participated in. Partnering with Michaux State Forest, volunteers, and others to improve the mountain's trail network.
South Mountain Hike & Bike Festival
A group creating an annual Labor Day weekend festival centered in Mt. Holly or Boiling Springs including road rides, hikes, mtn bike rides?, paddling, local food, art, etc. (They will be asking MBM for support)
Village of Boiling Springs
A team devoted to making Boiling Springs a destination hub, a "livable walkable community", and a recognized "trail town" by the ATC.
Adams County Fruit Belt
A group wanting to create a brand of quality for Adams County fruit growers and promote locally grown products.
Cumberland County Agriculture
A team to promote the cultural heritage and local farmers combined with economic development in the county.
That's the short and sweet. They were all much more interesting than I could possibly describe here.
Day 2
I learned this week that people who make important trail decisions read this blog. Two others from the conference want to attend our meeting and/or join MBM. One of them suggested we create a separate front web page for true visitors and keep our dirty laundry bullshit in a separate area. I think many members may like this idea, though none of us know how to do it. I'll take a look into the Blogger settings and see. I've seen other blogs do it. Are any of you Anonymous people good at this kind of thing? Wanna help?
Whoever suggested putting the meeting minutes up, thank you. That's a good idea. I'll get the minutes from the last 2 meetings (if I still can find them) and post them over there on the right.
