Misnaux-shoein'

Headed out today with a small band of merry makers. It was my first experience on snowshoes - ever.

Hiked around the Mont Alto area for a little over 3.5 hours and covered a lot of ground.

Brett was all smiles after landing the first snowshoe 720-Gnar-McTwist-with-cheese when we sessioned at the Playstation.

Still a lot of snow in them thar woods. Might as well make the most of it while it lasts.

Larry, Not much of a track in your pictures

Here is a proper track in knee deep powder. After I broke two miles of trail, I encountered another skier coming in the opposite direction. He was walking because his skinny track skis did not float in the powder. When walking the snow was actually waist deep. This was at Laurel Ridge. We were happy to meet because it meant neither of us had to break track any longer.

MSM, embrace it

a 3-hour tour

some low fruit, low angle, a few turns, and a solid base that should last a while
good for several easy laps then on to Snaggy Ridge

Hey DKeg, this road won't be in the Iron Cross

XC conditions for the weekend

What are the snow conditions?

Has a helmet ever saved your skin?

Gladi8r Concept

I was just wondering if anyone has any good "I'd be dead if I weren't wearing a brain bucket" stories?
I busted a helmet on Abby last year. The bike went down to the side and my head smacked a rock hard enough to crack the helmet. (explains a lot doesn't it?)
Some say you should replace the helmet every year because things like sweat and sunlight cause them to get brittle.
Anyone?

other uses

these two links popped into my Inbox this morning

this is an interesting site. A few weeks ago there was a thread on "open carry" in Michaux, which I don't think is the same as open container

West Virginians are migratory

Michaux Road conditions?

How are the roads up in Michaux? I would like to do the road part of the Iron Cross this weekend. Anyone know if it is doable? Anyone want to be my guide? Anyone have a GPX file of the route?

It's all good!

Mont Alto Trail Report

Don and I took 'Park Trail' to Staley, climbed both 'Buckets', made our way across 'Hearth' and back down Staley. Had a blast! Met two original MBMers on the trails! So... if we get some rain tomorrow and more freezing temps, we may be able to start riding again with the studs. I don't mean you, Mooch.

Thanks Travis!

Steve and I enjoyed a great 5-6 mile out and back loop tracked in by Travis who was kind enough to lead us today. My first real XC adventure. Wish we had snow like this all winter. The bonus is we can ride the same route when the snow melts. Steve had so much fun he did another loop with Larry who we met coming up the road as we were leaving. Larry thanks for the map of your trails, if the snow sticks around we will check them out soon. All you MBMers riding trainers or watching TV get some skis for next year, they cost about as much as a pair of studded tires. Navigation was not an issue, Steve was getting direct satellite feed from NASA to his head set.

XC, Nordic, Exercise?

Call it what you will, it feels great to get out of the house and office. Embracing current conditions and going for it. Not to painful today however going down a hill on XC skis is harder (for me) than mountain biking down hill with no hands. Going to do some cross country skiing with Seeber tomorrow around 10am. Exact route not yet known. Post if you want to come along.

Sunday Ride?

Anyone interested in either XC or downhill skiing Sunday AM?

Wednesday Night in NorChaux

If anyone is interested, we are planning to snowshoe and XC ski from our house at 6:00. Get out of the house and work off some of that pent-up aggression before cabin fever turns you into Jack Nicholson!

Michaux Mash Pre-ride

Anyone know of or want to lead a Mash pre-ride in the next month or so? I know the snow has to melt first. I am just putting the idea out there.

South Mountain Summit this week

You may have seen this a couple times in the Chambersburg, and probably other, local papers. There's a lecture Thursday night at the Capitol Theater in Chambersburg and an all-day meeting Friday in Newville. I'm going Thursday, and I've registered as a mtn biker for Friday.

I don't know what this is all about, but I think whatever it is, it should not be done without mountain bikers in the know at the very least. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Thurs. lecture is free and has a reception beforehand, which I'm hoping is a euphemism for beer.

Sunday Ride At Gambrill

The yellow trail is fabulous. I recommend getting out there. Plenty of free parking. No snow on the trails, unfortunately. I think the Rangers shoveled the whole thing.

SKI

Crash and I are skiing at White Tail Sat. Am. We are going to meet at the lift at 8:30. I will have my radio with me and will be on channel 10-30

Westminster Bike Swap

Anyone interested in going to the bike swap is welcome to ride with me. I have room for two people (three can fit) in the back seat.
I plan to leave Chambersburg around 8am and drive out Rt30.
The website states that parking will be at a minimum due to the snow.
We plan to stay there 2-3 hours.
If interested post a comment with your contact info.

Global Warming....LOL...hahahahahahahahahahaha

Wednesday 8:00 AM

Yes, the snow on our deck is almost as deep as the railing is tall.
But Sven is keeping a vigilant watch over the blizzard.

Winter is not so bad

Couldn't make it to Whitetail, so did some XC skiing on the C&O Towpath, along the Potomac. The commute is easier, this is 5 minutes from my house. Skiing in this unpacked snow is as good a workout as a mountain bike ride, even without the climbing.

Winter Blows

Who is sick of winter? How about an MBM winter party to get 2010 started right! Stay tuned, if I remember this post in the AM I may actual throw one!

Thursday ride

Anybody riding tonight? Last ride before the big snow! Chris, Sally and I rode at Mont Alto last night. The snow was easy to descend in but we climbed up the fire roads.

Groundhog Day

Pre-storm ride. Amazingly no groundhogs and no shadows.

RIDE

This Sunday will be at Old Forge. Ride time 9am. We will be blessed to have T as our ride leader. I gave him all the rights to lead the ride and we will all follow in his tracks. YAHOO... I can only guess where we will end up.
