Upper Buckets this evening

There have been a couple grumpy old men working on the Upper Buckets this week. It is cleaned and raked within about 150 meters of Hog's Head Rd. A few good wo(men) could finish it this evening if someone brings loppers and leaf rakes. Maybe a McCloud or Columbo would be useful too. Almost forgetting- the upper entrance is not open, about 6 or 8 meters to cleanup.

Sunday Hunting Bill Introduced

This is no joke. HB 1760.

Check it out HERE. It's a short and sweet bill--two pages.

Excerpts from the text:

"Amending Title 34 (Game) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, permitting hunting on Sunday.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Section 2303 of Title 34 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes is repealed:
[§ 2303. Hunting on Sunday prohibited.
(a) General rule.‑‑Except as otherwise provided in this title, it is unlawful for any person to hunt for any furbearer or game on Sunday."

"Section 2. Title 34 is amended by adding a section to read:
§ 2303.1. Hunting on Sunday.
(a) General rule.‑‑It shall be lawful for any person to hunt for any furbearer or game on Sunday as provided by regulations promulgated under subsection (b).
(b) Regulations.‑‑The commission shall institute Sunday hunting and shall promulgate appropriate regulations under section 2102 (relating to regulations) within one year of the effective date of this section."

You can use this link to find who your House Representative is to send them your position on this bill. If you do, make sure to reference HB 1760 in the subject line and/or body of the email.

We need to keep an eye on this.

http://www.publicopiniononline.com/ci_18319526

This issue has been coming up in the news for the past few weeks.
The PA Farm Bureau appears to be bringing it up in anticipation of a move by the state to allow the game commission to make these decisions. At least that's what I've gathered.
Sounds like there was an attempt to pass a bill in '09 that failed. But I guess giving the decision to the game commission would allow a change without having to pass a bill?
Please discuss . . .

Thursday Rides

There has been talk about moving the ride location from Mont Alto on Thurs. I don't think that would be a good idea. Mont Alto has alot to offer in some great trails. But with the resent logging we are losing some of our trails so I think we need to get up there and reopen those lost trails. Some of the logging is complete in some areas. This Thurs. we will be reopening the upper buckets. So quit your winning about losing trails and get up to Mont Alto and help reopen some great trails. Lets get some work done so we can ride more. Bring tools and bring your bike to ride to the location but be ready to do some work!

Thursday Night Rides

Recently we decided to move Thursday night rides to some other locations due to the logging in the Mont Alto area and a lack of attendance there. Are we still trying alternate locations for the Thursday night rides? Do we want to change the location for Thursdays permanently? Where will the ride tonight be?

Cramping during rides?

Many of us are cramping on rides. I searched for information or remedies for athletic cramping on the web. Here is some of what I found....
These are aside from a proper diet, conditioning and hydration.

1) Stretching. There is ample data to conclude proper stretching before exercise will reduce cramping. It is also recommended to gently stretch or extend a cramped muscle until the cramp is gone.

2) Dr. Robert E. Agee of the Alabama Sports Medicine Institute treats acute exercise-associated muscle cramps with mustard. An athlete who begins to cramp is given one packet of mustard, washed down with water, every two minutes until the muscle cramp is gone. Although no formal research has been conducted to identify if, why, or how the mustard is working. Regardless, mustard packets are easy to carry and often no more than two are necessary.

3) Staff at the University of Northern Iowa have found that by giving two ounces of pickle juice to an athlete 10 minutes before exercise, even the most chronic cramper can remain cramp-free during high-intensity exercise. Pickle juice also seems to effectively treat acute muscle cramps. When an athlete suffered severe bilateral cramps in his gastrocnemius, he was taken out of the game and given two ounces of pickle juice. The cramps were completely gone within 30 seconds. They have tried this technique with other athletes and found it to be universally effective, with the great majority of cramps not recurring. It did not say how often to take pickle juice throughout the activity or if more was even necessary.

4) There are also statements saying a little bit of salt in your diet isn't a bad thing if you are properly hydrated and active especially during outdoor activities in high heat.

All of this assumes you are in good health to begin with.
There you have it. No more cramping in MBM ever!
