more of Brian's story

Unfortunately, there is more of Brian's story.  He asked me to post this here.  Like many around here, I met Brian on some Michaux rides in 2011.  Then I saw him again at AS-5 of the Shenandoah Mtn 100, when he passed me at 85 miles.  He had a big hole in his leg, blood, and no idea that he also had Stage 4 cancer in his head and neck.  He was super happy to be nearly finished his first Shenandoah 100.  Here's an old MBM post on that.

And here's a great story on him before he ever had cancer.  His story was pretty impressive before he even started this sport of mountain biking.  https://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=5860

Brian and Lee Ann have been overwhelmed at the support shown by the mountain bike community.  They certainly deserve it, and more.

His co-workers in Baltimore are doing what they can:

It was a year ago this weekend that Zach held a benefit ride for Brian the day before the Tuscarora endurance race. Brian was there, but not riding. He was very thin, weak, and not ready to ride. His voice was squeaky and tearful. I wasn't sure if he would ever ride again.

I saw him again in July last year as I worked the finish chute at the Curse of Dark Hollow. He came in bleeding and smiling, with ripped up shorts, finishing the 20 on his rigid single (a bike he just sold). He raced all season and got right back up to where he was. Never knowing that tumors were growing in his lungs.

If you see me out wearing my Bulldog jersey, you'll know why.

I've never met anyone who was such a fierce racer and was still the coolest guy just go on a chill ride with. Brian has all of my respect and gratitude and I wish him much strength in his continued battle. I hope to ride his rigid SS with half the drive that he had. What an inspiration he has been to so many.

I walked in to Gettysburg Cycle this past Tuesday to drop off my bike for some service and was thrilled to run into Brian there. He was hanging out at the bike shop. Not a day goes by that Brian isn't in my thoughts. He's been an inspiration to me. We're the same age and have raced in the same class and while I may never reach the heights he has in racing he's definitely showed me that I can achieve more than I thought possible through his own accomplishments. I hope our encounter at the bike shop lifted his spirits a bit. It made my day to be able to see him and let him know I'm pulling for him in person!
