Need a Fork!

Does anyone have an unused 26in rigid mtbike fork around?
Threadless. Did you know they make threaded ones??
I need one for my little frankenstein 69er SS.

Have an unused carbon rigid 29er fork w/ a somewhat shorter c-to-l length; which might work. Plan on selling it off; along w/ several other 29er suspension forks, wheelsets and frames @ Mtnside this weekend...

Don't you want a 29" fork? Or are you making a 69er?

Who are u?
What is happening at Mountainside?
What 29er susp forks do u have, and what shape are they in?

I had the same question about his 96er or 69er...

It's gonna be a chopper. All the kool kidz are riding them.

I think all that beer brewing is starting to mess with drw's head.

Alright, Ya'll:
I have my 26in SS frame.
It has a 26in wheel in the back.
I put my 29er wheel and 29in steel fork in front and it rides ok - kinda like a harley?
So is it true that a 26in rigid fork with my 29 wheel should ride better, and that most rigid 26in forks will accept my 29 wheel?
Now whether that makes my bike a 69 or 96 or even a 46, I guess I'd have to consult the kamasutra . . . or bucsexy - I hear he's up on sexual numerology.

a 29 wheel might not fit in all 26" forks

depends on the Axle-Crown length of the fork.

I've never heard that it'll ride better with a 26 fork and 29 wheel.

Hmmmm.
The length of the 29 fork really pushes out the axle and flattens the headtube angle.
I thought if I shortened that length it would steepen the angle a bit.
Guess I'll have to look around a little.
Another case where it's not as easy as I thought it would be.

I have 2 old 26" forks and just tried a 29" wheel in them both and it don't fit. I do think you might be on to something if you can find a fork that works, the rack on the 26" fork will be less and probably shorten the wheelbase some, but my next thought is what about toe overlap?

You can use the 26" fork with a 29" wheel...just use a road tire. Problem solved! Like camps said it's all about the axle to crown length for a 26" fork. Longer is better. Everyone knows that.

Talk to Joel or Don Pagano. I'm sure they've tried something like this.

Clown - drw isn't concerned about toe overlap. He's known for his "small feet".

i have a shorter 29" steel fork that came with my blackbuck. it's a non-suspension-corrected fork. it may get you what you're looking for. it's much shorter than, say, a Niner steel fork. axle to crown is 435mm versus 490mm for the Niner fork.

i also have a Niner fork if you want to chopper that mofo out.

you want a salsa 26" fork suspension corrected. I think it's 460mm crown to axle. I use it on my 69er.

Thanks for all the advice!
I guess I just measure the radius of the wheel from the axle to the end of the tire tread to determine how much axle-crown length I need?
I'll measure and post my results.

OK.
So the axle to crown of the steel niner fork I have on now is 489 - sounds the same as what Brett has.
I have 3 inches (or about 76 mm) of free space between my tire and the metal at the crown.
Can anybody help me figure out what size to try??? And if it's worth it, for that matter.

the suspension corrected 26" fork from salsa is the perfet fork. I have a 29" wheel with a 2.2" mtn king on it and I have plenty of space. The longer forks will give you more rake and the bike will not steer well. You want the shortest fort that will allow a good tire and that is 460mm. I have already done the homework...it's the best option!

Jes (at Gettysburg) can get you the same fork he got me.

Thank you Anonymous!
Sorry everybody is saying such mean stuff about you.
I guess I'm heading to Gburg!

you are welcome....I don't know why they don't like me?

Merv will be cheaper!

still saying i have an OS Blackbuck rigid 29er fork you can try, too. shorter than the 26" salsa fork anon is talking about and built for a 29er so it'll take a decent tire. you're welcome to try it out to see how it affects the bike.

really depends what frame you are working with and what length fork the original frame was spec'ed with (which you never identified). saying that one fork is definitely the one you want without knowing the frame may not be very accurate. it may have worked for mr. anon but may not work for you. what frame and how long of a fork was on the original 26" setup?

Put a fitty in the back and run any 29er fork you want. Your more than welcome to try mine.

Stop spending all your money on Cosmo magazines and Zima. Buy a 29er SS like all the cool kids have!

I'd try Brett's fork first and see how that works. Another option is to have Mooch mooch a 29er SS for you...

Cosmos are gettin 'spensive!
Brett, I'd like to try the fork you have out. When/where can I get it from you? I plan to be at the group ride sunday morning, and also plan to do the summit ride next tuesday.
Let me know how I can get it to try.
Thanks!

I have a new Surly 26" suspension corrected fork which will work. Most all 29er tires will fit. The biggest I tried was a 29" WTB 2.55 Wierwolf on a Stan's Flow rim. That is big! $40. shipping is extra. davidkegley@hotmail.com

FYI...Craigslist has several 29er forks and 29er wheelsets currently listed!
